Addiction can have a serious impact on health, relationships, finances, work and daily life. If you are concerned about your own behaviour, or about someone close to you, there are organisations that can help. This list brings together a few starting points covering different kinds of addiction, including support for family members and others affected.
Drugs
NHS drug addiction support explains how to get help for a drug problem, including speaking to a GP or contacting local drug treatment services directly. It outlines treatment options such as talking therapies, medicines, detox and self-help, and points people towards further support.
Talk to Frank provides a tool to find local and national drug and alcohol support services in England, alongside a helpline and emergency advice.
Adfam may be especially helpful for families affected by drug or alcohol use. Its information explains that families often need support in their own right, and highlights local family support services, online groups, helplines and other specialist organisations.
Gambling
GamCare supports anyone affected by gambling harm. It offers a 24/7 helpline, live chat, WhatsApp, online community spaces and links to local support, as well as self-help tools covering issues such as self-exclusion, blocking software and money management.
GamCare also runs the National Gambling Helpline as part of the National Gambling Support Network, which provides free, confidential and personalised support across Great Britain for people experiencing gambling problems and for those affected by someone else’s gambling.
Sexual addiction and compulsive sexual behaviour
ATSAC - the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity - is a not-for-profit organisation providing information and support on sex addiction and compulsivity. Its website includes information, FAQs, self-assessment tools, therapist listings, support groups and support for partners.
This page is intended as a starting point. Some people may want peer support, some may need treatment or professional help, and others may be looking for advice because someone close to them is struggling.
